one-legged chicken

Thread Starter

I recently rehomed 9 hens, including a one-legged hen (Peg). All were getting along fine to begin with but after a couple of months the 8 turned on Peg and pecked at her vent quite badly. I took her out and have been keeping her in the house to allow her wounds to heal. She goes out during the day and takes it in turns with the others to be in the coop and run or in the garden. I don't want to mix her back in with the others incase it happens again but don't want her to live on her own. I just wondered if anyone has any ideas for a companion for her? I have been looking at ducks but really don't know what the best option would be for her :s

I personally would make a pen out next to the others so she can see them but not be pecked by them. You could try a more gentle breed like a silkie. I would introduce a couple to her when they are around 2-3 months. Your older hen won't actually bond with any she didn't grow up with, but they could give her company. I wouldn't try a duck, they are messy and pushy.
