I just put my chickens on their roost for tonight. It's only their fifth day going out so I have to help them, thus by picking them up and putting them on the ramp. Unfortunately I have had consistent problems with one particular Silkie roo pecking me. It's been from me picking up their feed holder and he pecks to me petting or picking up another chicken and he REACHES across their body to peck me. I have three other Roos and they've all done this to me also. Yet whenever they do this I clamp their beak shut and tap them on the head. All be other ones stopped pecking after a time or two of putting them back in their place. I really love all of my chickens and he's only 8 weeks old and I don't think he's a bad chicken I just don't get what his problem is. Please help. I don't want to kill him or rehome him.
I had a rooster named Chester who would sometimes peck when I picked him up. I just grabbed ahold of his beak and held it for a minute, and he learned pretty quick. On the other hand, the rooster I have now (Kiwi) acts more like yours and doesn't like me touching him or his hens. He didn't respond very well to this sort of punishment so I keep a shovel in the coop to put him in his place if necessary. If he goes after me, I push him away with it, and he looks like a fool in front of his hens so he stops. He respects me now, plus he knows that I have the food. If I need to pick one of the hens up, I do it when he's not looking or when he can't do anything about it. He doesn't freak out when he does see me do it, though, so I think he has finally learned who's boss. Hopefully your rooster is better than this! He probably is just taking a little while to learn. Keep at it!
Well it's good to hear that at least yours got better. Mine is named sarge and we do need him to stick around because one of our Silkie hens is very attached to him and she's kinda at the bottom of the pecking order. Plus her being a Silkie she's got really goofy stuff on top of her head and I'm pretty sure she's already lost of her vision above her. Anyways thank you! I'm praying I don't have to use a shovel on him though
You're welcome and what you're doing is great. That's pretty much what I did with Chester but he took awhile, longer than a few days. I think it took a week or two. So don't give up!
