Missing feathers on breast

Thread Starter

One of my year old Black Copper Marans has a patch of feathers missing on her breast.   She is the one with "not so developed" legs, so she squats a lot to peck/eat.

She seems to be the healthiest and happiest hen of all.

This "raw" looking area has developed in the past week.    A friend, who has children who successfully show chickens at fairs, FFA, 4H......asked if she every lays down.   Yes she does and I have seen her laying down to peck at scratch, but she'll just jump up and move on.

Again, she seems fine, I am just concerned.......or should I be?

I picked her up yesterday and rubbed the raw area to which she didn't show any sign of pain.

Any help will be appreciated.

I would keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get more raw or become an open sore and get infected. Since she is laying down to eat she could be developing a breast blister.

I'm not exactly sure what the solution to prevent it would be except, if you haven't done so, offer her treats/food raised off the ground so she doesn't have to lay down quite as much? Wonder if a crop bra may help - just my thoughts:)

Often times when hens go broody, they'll pluck the feathers from their breast area.
