Dear BYC, I have a year old speckled hen who has developed a rock solid lump of poo stuck to the feathers below her bum. I have read previous posts and with all our efforts to remove by snipping and bathing we are still unable to remove this lump. She has now plucked the feathers surrounding the mass and I'm worried bout her wellbeing. Previous posts have been really helpful however I'm at a loss as to what to do and how to remove this. Is this bad for her and can anyone offer any suggestions?

Welcome to BYC. Be sure that she does not have a prolapsed vent, which can cause tissue to hang outside. It looks red, but if left to dry out, it can become black and necrotic or dead. If it is just poop, I would try to pull it out dry, but if that doesn't work, then I would soak her in a warm bath with epsom salts or soap. Iit should soften with time. In the meantime I would try to take few pictures of her vent and post them, as well as look up prolased vent in chickens.

Thank you for coming back to me so quickly. I think it's just poop as I've seen her pass other poo ok. I gave her another wash down and managed to remove some more although I notice she has pulled out some feathers unde that area, between her legs now.. I will try and get a picture to post and search as you suggested. Many thanks
