On July, 28th 2016, I lost my Most Beloved Bird "Miss Red" She was a beautiful Rhode Island Red at 3 years old. She was the most perky, loving and tolerent bird i EVER had!!! Miss Red loved to go on walks and sit in laps. She even went to 2 parades and a 1st grade classroom. Please send loving notes here... http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1124787/give-thoughts-of-kindness

NOT at all they can only be wing sexed at or under 24 hours old

you can go by tail feathers, at that stage they are just starting to get their tail feathers in males will have slower growth, females typically grow their tails faster

Beyond a day old I personally don't believe chicks can be sex by feather growth. I've herd every story in the book and tried all of them and none are consistently accurate in my experience. That doesn't mean that they don't work for other people.... Just my two cents.

Feather sexing is valid only for a small number of hybrids and a few strains of pure breeds that are specifically bred for the trait. And even then it only works on day old chicks, nothing older.
