Welcome to BYC -- silkies are fairly popular and, as such, relatively easy to locate.  Are you wanting to order them from a commercial hatchery or looking to buy from a more local breeder?  If you share your location (even just a state) we can better help you with suggestions of where to get the birds you want.

Where are we going, and why are we in this hand basket?

It depends on your goals. Are you looking for inexpensive pets that are readily available or show quality birds, specific colors, etc? Do you want judt one or two birds or can you accommodate ordering several birds (the minimum order varies by hatchery)? Do you want unsexed chicks or birds old enough yhat gender is apparent? Silkies are not good candidates for vent sexing and notoriously difficult to sex until they are monthx old, not weeks like most chicks. There are pros and cons to both.
