I have a chick that had been pipped for 18 hours so I helped it n got shell off and white that's under shell but it's still n ball with thick tuff membrane around it with some veins so I wrapped n paper towel n put back n incubator..should I take that outer thats next to it off..it's alive so far

At this point you should remove the tough membrane over the chick. Make sure it is moist and that you do not injure the chick: gently peel it back. If it seems dry, rewrap in a moist towel and put in in the incubator for a while longer. If you see bleeding, stop immediately.

Thanks.they was a day late n my hatches usually were on time pretty much but not these maran chicks.they pipped waited a lot longer after pipping before hatching..glad I started just not helping cause they started hatching later on.have 7 chicks and 4 still not pipped that I can see but I thought I heard a soft chirp..should I just wait longer on them

Can you tell what kind of marans they are..looks like black maran pic I've seen..I got hatch eggs at a livestock auction and it just said marans on them..three are yellow, is that normal and one is all black with white underneath and two have white round face and underneath and one has white spot on head and grayish look by on back instead of just black on back

There are the 9 recognized varieties of the Marans: Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo, Black, Birchen, Black Copper, Wheaton, Black-tailed Buff, White and Columbian. There also blue varieties. If you google each color you will be able to see what the chick down for each color looks like, and maybe guess - but probably only feathering in will tell for sure.

Shelikirbey - I had to assist one of my chicks today. One hatched Saturday, one on Sunday, and my hubby & I check under Mama today, and we heard peeping. Saw the last egg, and she had pipped, but there was no zipping. I slowly pealed the shell back, and wet the membrane with a warm damp paper towel. She was pushing some, but seemed too tired to do the rest. Got her out and put her under a lamp. Got some electrolyte water mixed, and gave her a few drops every 30 - 45 min. About 2 hours later she was dry and fluffy, but I noticed her feet were a little splayed, so I made her some shoes. I have her separate from Mom and siblings till she is stronger, I don't want her flipping on her back.. She is quite vocal. She is beside me now, and wants my hand on her, so I type one handed right now.
