I have a homestead of 10 hectares in Africa! Tired of the rat race of the city!

Hello all chicken lovers!!

I have a small holding for 5 months and went on a frenzy to buy every cute poultry at the local farmers auction. A turkey breeding pair, Koekoek Orpington x 6 hens and 1 cock, 2 golden lace (wonderful mommies), 6 mascovy ducks, 3 geese, ....and my latest was the 200 day old chicks that i wanted to do an experiment on by raising them free range and grassfed.  But 20 died at 8 weeks. Winter is coming!

I found out about backyard chickens in my desperation to find out how to raise 170 chicks outside in a free range way.

I have 15 white dorper sheep and also have no experience... but i love them and i feed them carrots for snacks.

I also have grey bunnies who just got 5 babies and also need to know how to tame the baby bunnies ( as the parents are not tame)

I am 50 yrs old and its my first experience with small scale animal husbandry.  I live in Magaliesburg region Gauteng - 1 hour from Johannesburg and 1 hour form Pretoria.  My main skill lies in personal development- and I am setting up the farm to become a farm experience.

Cheers Viv

Nice to meet you Viv.  I think you need to  do some research before you  get any more new animals.  You can learn a lot about poultry on the "Learning Center" above .For specific

duck info.  please check out the Duck threads.  BYC has sister sites,  one for livestock which should cover your sheep.  Lots of bunny raisers  who can give you some basic info.

Day old chicks are very fragile,  especially without a mom to keep them warm and show them what is good to eat./drink.  Chicks don't really eat grass like grass fed cattle.  Long blades can cause crop impaction, which could have led to some deaths. They  need chick feed.  They are also defenseless and any predator could pick them off.

I'm sure others can tell you more.

Hi Viv and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us.

DD has given you some good advice and i would imagine that the South Africa members may also be able to help out - i would imagine that theres an SA thread (will check after i post this).

I know a couple of friends that started out "big" with their chicken-keeping businesses, only to suffer serious losses. IMO, its better to start small, and build up gradually, as you experience grows. As we both know, chickens are everywhere throughout the whole continent, and so are diseases. Maybe you may wish to consider reading up on those.

Best wishes

CT

Cant see a definitive SA thread, but you can post on the "where am i? where are you?" forum and hopefully get some responses from members down there.

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
