My name is Melissa and live in Wisconsin. I have 6 duck eggs in an incubator. The mom was attacked and the rest of the babies were eaten. I have no idea what I'm looking at when candling. They should be hatching next week I think....not sure how long mom was on the nest first. Can I put a washcloth at the bottom of the incubator prior to them hatching? What are some signs that they should be put in lockdown?

Hi :welcome Melissa

Glad you could join us here! Yes you can add a wash cloth, is it to get the humidity higher? The more surface area of water the higher the humidity. Towards the end of incubation the eggs should look pretty full of duckling. If you type duck candling in the search box above pics should come up on them.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

I was going to add the washcloth for humidity and because the bottom of the incubator has little holes in it. I am driving myself nuts with theses eggs! I candle them and am not sure what I am looking at. They have grown and now take up most of the egg- it's dark. The air sacrifice looks good. I have never seen blood vessels or movement but the ducks are growing. Is there any other way to know if they are alive?

Here is a duck candling chart ~

They look between 24 and 26. When should I stop turning them? Do I open the vents?
