I have recently hatched out a couple emu chicks about. 5 days ago and both where very healthy and vigorous. I would take them out of there own and run them around as early as day two since I know how vital it is to exercise there new developing leg muscles. Well just today I noticed that one of my emus does in fact have splayed legs that seem to happen quite suddenly. I have been feeding them unmediated chick starter. Which worked fine with my last clutch of emus. And I made sure that the material in their pen is textured so to eliminate slippage as soon as they hatched. Basically I've been looking for a cure for fixing the problem. But I'm told it's hopeless and that I need to euthanize the poor little guy. Which is probably true. But IS there ANY cure or hobble system that would would work. Or should is it in fact hopeless.

We have two 2 week old emus and noticed one was limping a little 2 days ago. It seems to have a splayed leg, it turns outward at almost a 90 degree angle. They eat a ratite food, Mazuri brand, plus some kale. I would be interested, like the person above, to know if we can do anything. I read that hobbling may help? Thanks!

In following this forum for 6 years and owning emus for 10 years, I don't think I've seen any success stories. In my experience raising them from day 1 on ground/soil (not plastic tubs or artificial turf), allowing them plenty of space to run and access to the sunshine on nice days and I haven't had troubles. That means a later hatch date, on years when I hatch early and it's still cold, therefore I keep them inside is when I've had troubles.

Thanks for your input. This is our first time with emus, live and learn I guess. I guess we will give him room to run, which he can still do fairly well, and see what happens. It's amazing how suddenly it seemed to happen.
