I just got my 7 week old chickens moved over to one of these hanging bucket nipple waterers.

The chickens took to it within a half hour with me playing with it in front of them, but I am noticing that throughout the day there is wet pine shavings under the bucket..not soaking wet but damp.

I am wondering if I should try to get some form of a tray to put directly under the bucket so that the water doesn't seep into he floor. I dont see the nipples actively dripping, so I am guessing its just residual water left on the nipple after they drink.

any thoughts?

We bought one of these and I have to admit... I hate it. It leaks like crazy.

Our quail drink about a gallon and it leaks 2 more each week. Maybe more.

It has totally ruined our deep litter in the quail coop which now reeks. Plus it goes through so much water we might as well have one of the "messier" designs.

I bought horizontal nipples to put on a 5 gallon drum for my chickens and I love those. No waste, no mess. I found a few threads where quail can use the horizontal ones, so I have a second batch on its way from Amazon. If the quail can't deal with the horizontal nipples.... Well, we may have to redesign the coop!

How is it with today's technology we don't have a simple mess free, leak free watering system!?!

I can't believe the hen hydrator gets anything but one star reviews. Must be people using them exclusively outside or who don't mind wasting gallons at a shot. Hmph. You can see how I really feel about that thing!

Switch over to a horizontal nipple waterer, the vertical nipples do in fact leak and that has to taken into account when placing them...

Mine is essentially everything above... No leak, no mess, and even auto filling and heated, the only reason I have a dip tray under it is to catch any splashing and waste from the birds as they drink and that is minimal... The drip tray drains out to a 3 gallon bucket outside the coop area but I never even have to empty the bucket as the waste water never exceeds normal evaporation rates...

You can also see the mini version in my brooder, not a drop of water to be found under it, nor any wet wood shavings even with no drip tray...

Yes, I love the horizontal nipples Just like that for our chickens. Here's hoping the quail can trigger them, too.

Somebody out there should make an already-assembled horizontal waterer and patent it quick. Our Wilco (like tractor supply) has nothing like it.
