Hello! I have a question...

Hi! I have 5 laying hens and have one girl that started laying no shell eggs a few months ago.  We have tried oyster shell, ground egg shells, upping protein and vitamins in their water.  So far nothing is working.  She is the only one we are having trouble with and this has been ongoing for months.  They seem to be eating the broken egg too, which I heard is a bad thing?  To go back a bit, she was laying eggs that were so large they were getting repaired half way through.  Now every egg she lays is shattered once it hits the shavings.  Is there anything else we could be doing for her?  We got her already laying and I have no idea what her age is, nor do I know how long she has been laying.

Hi welcome-byc.gif

Glad you could join us here! It sure sounds like she is having a few egg machine problems. Here is an article to check out on them ~ http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/common-egg-quality-problems

You might also like to pop by the egg laying section of the forum where I'm sure other members will be able to help you ~ http://www.backyardchickens.com/f/18/chicken-behaviors-and-egglaying

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

Sounds like  that's the reason she was sold.  Egg eating is a bad habit to break.  it usually starts with broken eggs and then hens figure out how to break them . Your hen may be unable to utilize the calcium in the feed. You can also put out a container of crushed oyster shell that all the hens can partake freely if they feel they need it.  Obviously the  hen you mention  has other problems with egg production.
