Barred rock-Jack or Jackie?

Hi! Barred Rocks are my thing. You have a BR cockerel there. The head spot tells more than the barring does on that one, but combined tell me it's a cockerel. I love BR roosters. They don't have to be aggressive. None of mine are, but then, I breed for temperament in all my breeds so nothing aggressive gets to reproduce here.

The bad experience was from a RIR. I did do my research before choosing a breed and Barred rocks seemed to be a good fit for our family. We are also getting two Buff orphingtons and two black Austrolops Wednesday for our boys to raise for 4H.Thanks agian for your help.

I think BRs are a great choice for any homestead flock. I've had Orpingtons in Buff as well as Blue/Black/Splash, great breed and some swear by their Australorps. Best of luck to you!

I hope he is not. The known pullet seems to be more dominate than the questionable chick (one pictured above). They are from a hatchery and I have read that some hatchery birds tend to be more aggressive due to the fact that the males have to compete to breed. Hopefully if we are social with him early on and he is the only rooster, things will work out.
