mis-shaped egg

I have 6 chickens and they are all good layers although one of them laid this unusual egg yesterday. Can anyone please tell me if they have had anything like this and what could have caused it.
 
Hang around chickens long enough, and you'll see lots stranger than that. I think someone a few years ago started a thread asking for posts of strange eggs. I posted one that looked like a potato.

I have no idea why these strange eggs appear every so often. The "potato" was laid by a one-year old, and all her eggs since have been perfect.
