A little sad and need advice

First time broodies, sister silkie mixes. They had 6 eggs. One hatched yesterday and we moved them to the brooder and grow up area. I think this is where I made my mistake. It has a short ramp that doubles as a door to close up the nesting and feeding area. I left it down.

Go out this morning and both mom's and baby chick are down the ramp. My guess is they couldn't get back up with the chick so the other eggs were left. The nest and food area was destroyed I guess looking for the chick. They are very protective of her.

Found one egg that was bloody and look trampled, chick dead. Found another chick half out the shell, still alive and another egg zipping and still alive. The other 2 eggs or chicks are nowhere to be found! Where could they have gone?

I took the two live ones inside and put them in the incubator. They have hatched are doing fine.

Question is do I give them back to the mommas? Right now they have the lone chick between them. Ideas or suggestions?

Going forward, the ramp will not be put down until the chicks are a couple weeks old and can get up and down themselves.

Big hard learning curve for me today.

Moving broody hens in the middle of a hatch frequently results in such behavior. They figure that the chick is the only one to hatch and go into mothering/feeding mode. If the two that you hatched are mobile, I would put them under the mothers tonight while they are sleeping.

This mistake has been made many times by many people. Some hens will tolerate such a move - others just won't - not your fault.

I put the other two back out with the mommas this evening and no issues. Happy to have the 3. But still sad I probably caused the demise of the other 3.
