My year old hen is a happy energetic free ranging girl that lays an egg almost everyday. Normally she lays her egg everyday about the same time in late morning. Last week I noticed she come out of hen house walking funny...stopped it looked like she was trying to lay her egg but couldn't. Then after a little while she had past her egg. It's been about 5 or so days now since this occurred and I had just noticed same thing happening again. She was just standing there you could tell she was having difficulty. .then finally laid her egg. Now this was at 8:00 in the evening. ..way past her usual time. I also noticed she has alot of poop on her feathers surrounding her bottom. Can anyone help me with this sweet hen?

Welcome to BYC.
Are you offering layer feed and oyster shell?
It sound like she may be egg bound or is starting to have laying problems.

I believe Wyorp Rock got it right.

The links are extremely helpful. Since she is able to pass her own eggs... it is best to treat this quickly with increase in calcium. May need to increase on your grit as well help with her droppings.

Yes giving her layer feed...I will give calcium and offer more grit. Thanks so much for your help.
