Well I think I've seen it all. I am 53 yrs old and have been around chickens my entire life with the exception of the 5 years I was in college. (why finish in 4 it was too much fun ?!!!!).
Anyway last night I decided to bring my 6, 5 week old pullets out of the coop for some fresh air and some grass. I have seen this hawk for several years now and he has been hanging around consistently lately going after all the young rabbits and fledgling birds, the robins, cardinals, sparrows and house finches love all my bushes and trees. So because of that I was hesitant to just bring them out.
I have a hardware cloth cage I made (covered on all sides) so I decided to put them in that for safety sake plus I'm getting too old to chase 5 week old chicks around.
So I am sitting at my chicken patio and the cage is at most 6 feet from me. My hens (in their covered run) panic and scatter in every direction and poof like magic this hawk is sitting on top of the cage. It was just a BLUR.
I sat there for 15 to 20 seconds and this hawk eyed me, eyed the now frozen in their spots chicks and so on.
I stand up, he looks at me, I take a step, he looks at me, I do this until I was within two arms lengths of him, I "jumped" at him and he finally takes off.
Absolutely could have cared less that I was there, no fear really.
