my wonderful hen

MY BIG GREY HEN IS THE LEADER OF MY FLOCK AND VERY TAME... I RESCUED HENRIETTA 2 YEARS AGO ALONG WITH HER TWO IDENTICAL YOUNGER GIRLS.. SHE IS PROBABLY 5 + YEARS OLD..SHE SURVIVED A BEAR ATTACK IN THE MOUNTAINS AND I GOT HER FROM A FAMILY WHO WERE TRYING TO WORK WITH AN AUTISTIC CHILD...ANYWAY, SHE COMES WHEN I CALL, SHE GETS IN MY LAP IF I SIT, SHE IS REALLY A WONDERFUL SMARTISH ( I HAVE GUINEAS SO I KNOW STUPID!) HEN...

TONIGHT, SHE DID NOT COME TO THE COOP ( SHE IS ALWAYS FIRST THERE) AND I FEARED THE WORST.  WE LIVE IN THE FOOTHILLS OF NO. CA SO PLENTY OF PREDATORS..... I CALLED AND CALLED HER AND SUDDENLY SPOTTED HER UNDER SOME STAIRS, WHEEZING PATHETICALLY..... SHE WAS FINE EARLIER TODAY.....I CANNOT IMAGINE WHAT IS GOING ON... SHE SEEMS VERY WEAK, DISINTERESTED IN FOOD OR WATER AND STRUGGLING TO BREATHE...EVERY FEW MINUTES SHE SNEEZES VIOLENTLY...SHE SEEMS EXHAUSTED.

I INJECTED HER WITH TYLAN 50, GAVE HER SOME DROPPERS OF OLIVE OIL AND MANY DROPPERS OF WATER- TRIED TO GIVE HER SOME YOGURT BUT SHE WAS NOT INTERESTED ...

IT SEEMS LIKE SHE MIGHT BE DYING BUT I AM BAFFLED....ALL THE OTHER 6 HENS ARE FINE...THEY ARE ALL  FED SCRATCH  AND FREE RANGE DURING THE DAY....

ANY IDEAS?  I HAVE NEVER HAD A HEN DIE SO MAYBE THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING?

THANKS

NEVER MIND,REST IN PEACE SWEET HENRIETTA!

It sounds to me like some type of respiratory illness or disease of some type. Giving her tylan I believe was a good choice since it does help with respiratory illness. Has she been vaccinated? Was she out in the heat? Sun? Is possible that she was overheated? Did you notice any other symptoms other than breathing difficulties and lack of interest in food or water? Was their any chance she could have gotten into any type of mouse poison?

I hope she continues to recover!!!!

SHE WAS FINE YESTERDAY MORNING- NO SIGN OF ILLNESS.

THE REST OF MY SMALL FLOCK WILL BE WATCHED CLOSELY....
