So, we got our little coop built and I laid linoleum in it and up the sides to hold the bedding. Got my washed river sand, got it in, mixed in a little Sweet PDZ, all fine. Put the chicks in last night and this morning it appears that they have churned much of their poo into the sand, as in made it into fine particles. Looks like they had a little runny stool, probably stressed from being moved and whatnot. My question: is this going to be a continuing thing, or will I be able to scoop the majority of the poo out once everyone's solid again? I chose sand because everyone seemed to rave about how easy it was to keep clean. If it's going to get poo churned into powder in it as a matter of course, I might as well use shavings or corn cob bedding and remove it all regularly.

i reckon that it will only be occasionally that this is to happen. I'd recommend using shaving until your chicks are 4 months.

Sorry to jump on the thread but was wondering why to avoid sand until 4 months? My chicks are due to move outside in the next couple of weeks and there is sand on the floor of the outdoor run. Do I need to change this? They are on shavings inside at the moment. Thanks for any help

Im not really hot on the idea of lugging the sand out, and then back in two months from now. What is age going to do here?

Should I use more of the PDZ?

@alifrew No I'd say they'd be just fine as long as its in their outdoor run. I just recommend it from 4 months on in the indoor run as their dropping can be very unpredictable and so shaving are easier to clean out. Also because shaving help to insulate the birds a lot more than sand

Its mainly because of the fact that the chicks dropping are very unpredictable. But after doing some research into the materials you mentioned you put in with the sand i'd say It aught to be just fine. And the increase of PDZ should help ( sorry i didn't understand what PDZ was ) . But just remember you won't always be able to scoop out their poo as they will produce ceacal quite often and very runny pooh during the warmer season( thats why i tend to use sand outside and shavings in )

Hope that helps

Brilliant. Thanks for that. I'll keep shavings in the brooder and the coop when I move them out to it and leave the sand just in the run. They have a covered run with sand on the floor and a netted one with grass so hopefully they will be fine with that

I was back & forth with the "sand vs shaving/DLM" for quite awhile, benefits to both methods and think it gets down to personal preference....

I opt for the DLM & love it! The shavings can be 'recycled' into the compost area or my garden/flower beds. I keep adding shaving (DE & PDZ) as needed, the chickens scratch around & air out the shavings, once in awhile I'll go in and give it a good rake & use an 18" tong to pick up the big stuff. Guess it helps that they roam the yard (fenced) when I'm home. Majority of their poop is under the roost where I have a poop board which I scoop daily. Works for me but the thought of having to shovel the sand out "someday" was not very appealing.
I do have shower curtains all around which I draw back in the mornings & close up in the evening or when raining a lot. If it's just a sprinkle & the shavings get wet, I rake it around and it dries up pretty fast. Yes, it's HUMID here too. Haven't had much issues with flies.

What is DLM, DE, and PDZ? I'm really new. Am in planning stages of coop. I know I want linoleum floors and small area of wire. I was just told heavier birds shouldn't be on wire, why?
