3 year old Welsummer has a large bulge on her abdomen below her vent.

It almost looks egg shaped and sized, but it is very soft when I press on it. There are no feathers left on it and it's big, so I think she must have had it for a while and I feel awful about that! The featherless skin is pink with areas of red and some white spots on it.

She eats and drinks normally, appears to feel fine, and as far as I know has been laying eggs normally.

I have her separated in her own pen now so no one pecks her. They live in a big pole barn with dirt floor. They sleep on roosts, have hay in their nests and access to free range grass covered acreage.

Here are photos. Poop is getting stuck on her vent feathers on top of the huge lump sticking out. At first it was bulging, but after holding her for a little bit it almost started to shrivel up...

help! what is this?!

I have chicken that has the same thing that I just discovered this morning! I stuck a needle in it to see what came out and nothing did... what did you figure out?

It sounds like it may be a hernia (the fact that it seemed to get smaller while you were holding her). Do you have an avian vet? Sometimes they will do fine with nothing being done, with small hernia's there can be risk of intestines getting twisted and blocked. Often nothing is done, but if you have a vet they can better advise you.
