Buff orpington taken by hawk - Page 2

Sorry for your loss! I have one Orpington and she is my favorite out of my flock. Truly is such a sweet breed. I also lost my second favorite, Ameraucana, 2 weeks ago and I was devastated as well.

How big was your Orpington? We have vultures here but my chickens are a pretty big size and the vultures don't bother.

Same.  My orpington was my first attachment--just a really mellow, friendly breed.

We have hawk, coyote, and dog troubles here.  I honestly just threw a tarp over my run with some wood, zipties, and little bungies to hold it up against the rain and the wind--chicken wire ziptied to the pen along the bottom.  Seems to work as far as being penned goes.  Learning along the way!

I've also had pretty good success adding roosters and non-chickens to my flock.  The roosters are always on patrol when they're out ranging.  The guinea fowl are so skittish and loud, that it helps to alert the rest of them to danger.  Most of the time it's just the cat or me.

Obviously, where you live would make having something as loud as roosters or guinea fowl problematic.

My orpington was very small, 3 years old, raised from a peep & practically weighed nothing. She was healthy & pretty, just tiny but she was the leader of the group. If i were to get more hens they would be orpingtons. It's only been a couple days

It has only been a couple of days since her loss & I'm having a hard time keeping the girls in their run. I like to see them out & they want out. With spring here & summer coming its going to be hard to keep them caged. I really didn't want a rooster but I guess I better start thinking about it
