Used wood chips for garden compost

I have been piling up my used wood chips for almost a year now. I was planning on planting a block of corn and was wondering if they'd make good compost. Someone told me the wood chips are bad for gardens but I'm not sure they know what they are taking about?

I'd use them in a minute.  Do you have other compost you can mix with them?  That would be even better.  Mulch is a majority wood pulp / chips.  Retains moisture and slowly breaks down.  Our composter gets everything but meat and fat / oil products.  Wood chips, straw, hay, weeds, egg shells, coffee grounds, duck / geese / chicken poop...  Vegetable scraps go to the ducks, geese and chickens.  Before we got them, those went into the compost pile as well.  I had to build a second composter due to filling the first one up.
