Newborn chick and her Mom question

Thread Starter
Our silkie bantam hatched her first baby the night before last. Whenever we check, the baby (along with a few more eggs she is sitting on) is tucked cozily under her. She doesn't seem to ever let the baby out from under her. How do we ensure the baby is getting let out from under her to eat? I know, seems like such a dumb question, sorry, just want everyone to be ok!

Chicks are still absorbing their yolks for the first few days, so it may not need to come out much right now?

Yes, because they absorb the yolk they can easily go three days without eating and drinking. I’ve had a chick hatch on a Monday and not eat or drink until Friday do fine.

It’s not a dumb question. I understand how nerve-wracking this can be, especially your first time. I know it’s hard to do but try to relax a bit and leave it up top Mama.

I don’t know what your facilities look like but your responsibility is to have food and water where the chicks can get to them when the broody brings them off the nest. That’s really about it.

Good luck the rest of the way and congratulations on the chick hatching.

I grow a little impatient when people seem to think that they are unique in the world. Of course they are. Just like everyone else.
