My Silver-Spangled Hamburg, though she's not at the top of the pecking order (about 3rd--all were the same age and raised together) is turning out to be a bully. She challenges and pecks the other hens on the higher pecking order (who soon set her straight), and she absolutely hates my two little Frizzle Cochins (raised separately from the others) and PECKS them at every opportunity! Thankfully, the other two hens that are higher on the pecking order run to the defense of the Frizzles. It's an amazing thing to watch as they intercept her when she goes after the Frizzles. I only recently learned (after raising her from a 2-day old chick--til now-- 12 weeks) that this breed probably will not do well in confinement. I don't know if this is why she's such a "meanie" who provokes the others without cause or not. Can anyone give advice on what I should do for her sake, as well as my poor little Frizzles (who do manage to stay out of her way most of the time)? The Frizzles are 10 weeks old. Oh, and one other thing! She and the Alpha hen are both crowing! Not exactly like a rooster but very close to it and very loud! I live in a suburb where "roosters" are not allowed. I would love to receive your comments on "crowing" hens as well!
