I am new to BackYard Chickens, and have two questions!
I'm kind of new with chickens, so I'm hoping someone can help me!
Here is my situation (with some background information):
My family has had chickens a few times before, but it was always my parents taking care of them (I'm 13). But this time, I'm doing everything, and they're basically my chickens. I have 4 silkies right now, and will be getting some rhode island reds soon. I got the silkies from someone I found on craigslist, they are all within a week of each other age-wise. I am getting 2 rhode island reds from a family friend, they are about 1 month old now. I am getting my other rhode island reds (8) from mypetchicken.com. I had the silkies in a bin, and now they're in a kitten/puppy playpen before they go outside (link below). The rhode island reds will follow the same steps (bin, larger bin, playpen). The coop I currently have is something my dad built a few years ago. It's 10x10 I think, maybe 10 feet tall? It's like a small house (doomed roof, windows, etc) It has some nesting boxes, roosting bar, etc. The run is probably 2 1/2 or 3 times the size of the coop (I don't know exactly the size).
Ok, so here are my questions:
Can the silkies and rhode island reds live together? I have asked a few people, and some say they can, some say I should try, some say they can't. If they can't live together, should I build another coop/run for the silkies?
I'm sitting here writing this right near the silkies, and I'm worried they might be fighting. They are periodically chasing each other, foraging in the bedding (I sprinkled some food around as well as in the trough), and laying down/sleeping. One has tried to almost jump/fly onto another one a few times. There are two larger ones and two smaller ones.
I don't know whats normal and whats not.
