"Noob" from Upper Peninsula Michigan. Hello Everyone!

Hello. Just wanted to introduce myself. I have been following this forum since before i got chicks to help answer alot of questions I had. We are from "DA UP" of Michigan. I currently have 6 RIR pullets that just turned 4 weeks old today. Looking forward to putting out in the coop in a couple weeks! Garage is starting to have poofy chick feathers flyin all over. My girls are getting quite big. I had an issue with one with problems pooping and straining which I posted on the forum before i introduced myself...but i had to research and get that taken care of first. She is doing great now. Strains a bit time to time but not too often. Yay!

I have a hubby and son and also 2 Russian Siberians cats. We have quite a bit of land and live in a rural area. We moved from downstate MIchigan a few years ago. I decided to get chickens because I just love em. I may get more as I progress but wanted to start with a small flock to see how it goes. Mainly I just want chickens for eggs and pets. I decided against a rooster because I don't want fertile eggs nor do i want chickees running around everywhere just yet. I may add a "Roo" sometime down the road. I have an Amish made coop, Quaker style 5x6 and attached run. I do plan on having my girls free range after they get used to their new home outside. I figured about 1 to 2 weeks before letting them free-range. Please stop and say hello. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like you put a lot of thought and planning into getting your first chicks.  Wish everyone did.    Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock, hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Hi and a warm welcome to BYC. It sounds like you've got everything well planned, which means fewer headaches further down the road. Do bear in the mind that free-ranging has its risk in terms of predators (I free range mine - well, in my garden and its a risk i personally feel worth taking). It might be good to join your state thread and do some reading up on the likely predators you have around, as well as how to minimise the risks.

Best of luck

Thanks for all the welcomes! Yes, i try and get all research done before i started but i know this is all going to be a learning experience everyday. Nothing in life ever goes as planned and things pop up that we never thought of. lol.
About the predators... i know we have many many predators. From black bears to coons, foxes, wolves, coyotes, weasels, etc. etc. I just really want to give my girls a chance to roam free, not to mention better eggs. I couldn't imagine keeping them caged up all their life. Take the good with the bad. I am gonna prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Nice to meet ya guys.

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
