Horizontal nipple waters and quail..,

How are these attaching to the inside/outside of the cage? I'm looking at Ebay and see different designs. I image they would all work pretty much the same? Definitely want to change as the waterer I have now (the tray with the plastic bottle) gets dirty really quickly.

The half cup ones have a slotted bolt (plastic) that fits over the wire and a wing nut

Okay, I see how it works now, thanks.

I ordered 10 off Ebay. Look slightly different, a bit more round on the cup but looks like the same principle. This should keep it a LOT cleaner plus it will actually give them more room in the cages.

As a side note, I changed out the feeders as well a few days ago. I had the trays with the oval holes going around with the screw on bottle. It worked well but they just seemed to waste a lot of food. Quite a bit was ending up under the cage. So I got a large protein powder container and cut holes around the bottom. Then I cut a 2 liter plastic bottle in half, turned it upside down and duct taped it inside to be the gravity container. Seems to be working out well and there is a lot less food waste.

Second question if I may...

I would imagine that the tubing is connected to a main bottle or jug on top of the cage. What are you folks using to screw into the bottle/jug that the tubing is connected to?

You can hook it to a low pressure regulator or to a bucket for gravity feed

Yes, I'm thinking gravity fed. Probably from a 5 gallon bucket or something similar. Just trying to figure out what the part is called that you'd drill into the bucket where the tubing connects. I'd imagine probably Lowes or Home Depot but don't know what that part is called to locate it.

I use the horizontal nipples and my quail love them. They will even play in them to just get a little wet.
My only gripe with them is that they are cheaply made! They should really be self tapping, as when I installed them in my pvc system they leaked really bad on the first install because of lack of threads. I ended up having to tap a thread in the pvc to get a good seal for them.
I have mine running in a pvc loop from my pump in my aquaponics system, so they have constant cool water. This will be my first year in AZ with quail and I'm worried about them getting too hot.

I got all the parts to do this with both the rabbits and the quail. The rabbits have the blue stemmed nipples and the quail have the half-cups. I'll get it all set up tomorrow. I'll be glad to have it up and running so that they have cleaner water and more room in the cage.

I use the horizontal nipples starting at 6 weeks. They have no problem figuring it out as long as they have no other option. You did right by giving them back their waterers but keep trying and they'll get the hang of it

I was wondering about this, I have 20 of those horizontal nipples and i'm not sending them back and getting anymore lol. I was wondering when was a good time to introduce them to my 2 week old quail and get them off the waters, and how to actually train them to get water from it.
