Hi folks!

I just joined, and I'm also new to chickens so I figured I'd post. I'm Karla, and I live in the northeastern part of BC, Canada. My hubby and I bought our first house last summer and intentionally bought in an outlying community in our area so that we could have backyard chickens. Someday we'd like to upgrade to an acreage and have more, and other farm animals as well, but we're starting small. smile.png

I have two chickens at the moment - we're allowed 6 in the village we live in. I had 6 originally and unfortunately lost 4 to a torrential downpour last Sunday. sad.png They were too young and I didn't get outside to herd them back into the coop until it was too late. So I've got the 2 left and as I'm going to be away for a week in the near future, I'm waiting until after we get back to get anymore.

I know that of the two I have left, one is a cuckoo maran, but I'm still trying to figure out what the other one is. I bought them at a "critter and craft sale" and had 6 different breeds, and while I remembered most of what I had bought, I couldn't remember which was which. Does anyone know what this pretty little girl is? I know that I had had a welsummer, a bielefelder, a cuckoo maline, an easter egger, the cuckoo maran (who survived), and I can't remember what the sixth was. She kind of looks like a faverolle, but I don't remember getting one of those, and from the pics I've seen online it's the males that are this colorful, and she was confirmed as a hen for me by the vendor.

Thanks!

Link to my Instagram since I can't seem to figure out how to upload a pic... maybe I'm too new of a member?

Does the unknown chick have five toes on each foot?  If so it is a Faverolle.

When you are able to post photos  you can also do so at  "what breed or gender is this?"  and get many opinions.  Welcome to BYC, sorry you and the poor chicks had such a bad start.

She doesn't have 5 toes, no...  so not a faverolle.  I may just need to wait til she grows up and see what she looks like then. :)

I'm very excited though... last night, someone in my general area (3 hours away, which I'm willing to drive for chickens) posted that they are hatching some eggs of my dream chicken breed - Icelandics!  I didn't even know these existed until a few days ago, but fell in love immediately... both because they're beautiful and have good characteristics for where I live, but also because I'm a history nut and my particular area of interest is the vikings.  (and I've been doing it way longer than that silly show has been on... I started long before we moved here and could even think about having chickens, in fact).  So I've put in an order for 6, since they will be unsexed, in the hopes that I'll get at least half female... they're going in the incubator at the end of May so providing the hatch turns out well, I should have more babies by the end of June.  (yes, I know I need to quarantine them until they're close to the same size as the original two, and being that they'll be barely a week old when I bring them home, I'll be raising them inside to start anyways)
