The sides of the coop...or the run?
All windows/openings on the coop should be closed in winter,
except the large front opening.

If you put a run over the front opening of the coop, especially if run is covered on top or sides, you will likely interfere with the air movement function of the coop.
This is just for the run. My property is laid out where the back of my property is to the west, so front of the coop will face south, and the sides of the coop will obviously face west and east, so a run on the side of the coop would look kind of strange. I realize with an 8x12 coop, they would not need to go outside the coop much in the winter, so maybe having a run that's not covered would be okay for them. I may also just try to figure out a way to put the run on the side of the coop, where the coop placement still looks aesthetically pleasing.

I have also been to your page as well and read a lot of what you have posted about the coop. I cannot tell you all how much I appreciate all of the information you all have put out there. It's been the best resource.
