Kate's Sassy Seramas

Pics
We are at 12 degrees this morning. My momma hen and her 6 littles (5 weeks old) have stayed outside with no added heat. I use one of those pre-fab coops as a grow-out coop. I opened the slide door this morning, and they came right outside! Hardy little boogers. :D

I also set a dozen Serama eggs in the bator last night. :yiipchick

Our temp is much the same here in TN, but windchill would place it more at zero. Waterers were frozen solid-another clutch is hatching-the last batch all DIS but one my wife assisted (it died 3 days later). Oddly, the eggs candled alive but just not right just before hatch time-air cells were almost half the egg; never saw the like. This new batch the eggs looked normal when candled-the clutch is small, just four-all are pipped. Another hen has gone broody. The cold does not seem to bother. "Hardy little buggers" for sure except for the tribbles and a couple micros; They've needed to be brought indoors in this cold. Supposed to be in the 50 and 60s in a couple days-YEAH!

My frazzle pullet laid her first egg this morning (just a bit over 4 months old); still haven't decided to try for a hatch with her. Come spring I'm going back to having an insulated garage coop. With a 30 by 60 garage I certainly have room for one. The coop I have now gets too cold and too hot.

Sorry about the dismal hatch, best wishes for the current ones!
Could those have been carrying the creeper gene? Odd to lose them all, right at the end.

I still have one "failure to thrive" chick, now over 5-weeks old. She's up to 35 grams, putting on a gram or so a day. Probably should cull her, but she's such a fighter.

Hey Kate, are your girls laying again yet??

Kate,

Below are pictures of the two frizzle chicks from the eggs I bought from you. I'll get pictures of the other three another day-they sure can run and hide!!!

Both little cockerels-sigh....

I have many young roos that show possibilities... which ones to keep and which to cull. At least my serama are docile enough to house most of the roosters together.... but still...

I wish I had your silkied roo!!

I have too many roos also! But that one is the only silkied one I have (some possibilities in the incubator though, and other than the chick that is still not thriving) The little black roo is much friendlier. That little silkied guy is a little demon. I work with them every evening, but he does not like me. Will climb all over me, but not let me handle him. He will take a single grain of feed from between my finger and thumb, but runs when I try to pick him up. Screams bloody murder going in and out of the cage! Maybe he will calm down eventually??
