Hello everyone! I have a ten week old Rhode Island Red and ten week old Silkie rooster. I was wondering if anyone knew when they would start to act like a rooster. You know crowing, mounting the hens, being alert for danger, etc.

most young cockerals are alert. And usually are pretty furious.Cockerals ill practice mating at about 2 months but cant fertilize till about 4 or 5 months.Cockerals will set out alarms for danger very young, its just noone listens to them (they worry over little robins.)

Crowing is optional for breeds. Some will crow at 3 days 4 weeks 5 months 2 years it all just depends.

I have a  few chickens.

Your cockrels will mature in their own time, just be patient.  When thy start crowing, other behaviors will also begin, and you might wish they were still babies!  Actual maturity will be much later, after adolescence.  Mary

Well that's good information. I just wanted to be prepared for any potential fighting that might break out between the two of them.

I'd like to add that this sounds like a bad combination;  RIRs tend to be aggressive, and Silkies are small and fragile.  Good luck!  Mary

Yeah my rir hens made my other hens miserable and adventually turned my entire flock into mean bullies, just imagine what a rooster could do.

Right, well I also have five week old rir hens coming of age growing with them and my Silkie hens bully everyone to no end. My top hen is a giant Silkie.
