Hello All

I've lurked around the site on occasion for a few years and finally registered today.  We have a farm in Sennett, NY in between Auburn and Skaneateles.  For those of you familiar with the organic farm, store and restaurant at Elderberry Pond, our farm abuts theirs.

We have grown no-till corn and soy for close to 20 years now and raised six kids here in a blended family.

We've joked for years that you don't really own a farm until after you die.  Depending on how old folks are we're on the Chicken Farm (previous multi-generational owners got out of the egg and meat business because they didn't want to compete with factory farms), in crazy Judge Graham;s house ("Young man, do you know how many speeding tickets I paid in your living room!?") and so forth.  The older local folks are just beginning to use our names in regard to the place,

We've had five Silkie chickens in the side yard as pets for 2 years and 8 Buckeyes (7 layers) in a much bigger run for a year and a half.  They're fenced on grass with coops I built and they get moved to fresh grass as needed.

Actually, to be accurate in numbers we had five Silkies until around 9 PM last night when someone went into the run and coop and took three of them.  The biggest reason I chose to register today is to post a thread about that with pics.  Silkies are uncommon enough that someone might notice three new ones in the culprit's yard....

I'll start that thread later today sometime.

Thanks for having a great site and best regards,

Lance

Welcome! I am really sorry about your theft. I would post about it in your States thread, you will probably get a better response then non local.
I too live and on a multi generational farm. FIL inherited the land from his father and it is being passed down to DH. I personally am a transplant big_smile.png but love the farm life.

That's terrible.

In my early years on BYC, it was a recurrent theme among the many chicken folks.    Often it was rare or top show quality birds that disappeared - where the perp had to know which birds were the top money breeds, etc.   Meat birds too were stolen  as well as eggs etc.    I don't think I've read of a heist since one of the top serama breeders had several  birds taken  a couple of years ago.  Often folks think they are safe in secluded areas  only to find  thieves love  it too - no  witnesses.

Hi welcome-byc.gif Lance

Glad you could join the flock! How awful that you have had some silkies stolen, I'm so very sorry. It seems to be a sign of the times at the moment and over here in the UK too. Chicken and dog napping seem to be in the up. The cheek of folk to just walk in and steal animals really does get my goat.

Good luck for the future, I hope the thieves stay away.
Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat frow.gif

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
