Sadly one of my gals died today. Yesterday I noticed she was lethargic and the others were attacking her. I put her in quarantine last night. This morning I was checking her over and she basically melted right into my arms into an unnatural position. Then she died. I did notice these worms coming out of her vent. What type of worms are these? I would like to treat my other seven gals and I know medications work on the type of worm.
Those look like maggots. Check the back end of all your hens and make sure they are free of poop. Caked on poop is where maggots love to live.
Poopy butts can lead to something called "fly strike", and yes, that can kill them if it's not caught soon enough. Thoroughly check her body for wounds, and check her vent to see if that's where the maggots cam from.
Those clumps are lice eggs. Check your other hens, 'cause they probably also have them.There was a dark red patch near her vent. I did not get a picture. And when I looked closer at the base of her feathers, there were these strange almost mold looking grey and white clumps with spots all over. I did not notice these before. Any idea what they could be? I could tell she was not feeling well and I did notice poop, so I had soaked her in warm water with Epsom salts, thus the wet feathers. Also, the worms don't look like any maggots I've seen before. This entire situation stumps me.
