Ducks really like routine. Well, I put a small pool in their yard. They won't go near it. I put the water near the pool this morning. They didn't go near that either, 4 hours later. I moved their water to the middle of the yard. Will watch and wait and worry.

These ducks are as dumb as rocks. It's been weeks, and they won't go near the baby pool. They won't eat or drink if the food/water is anywhere close to the pool. These are Hybrid 300 from Metzer Farms.

What color is the pool? When my ducks were younger, anything black made them very nervous. They are okay now. Tossing peas near the offending object helped quite a bit.

I would advise against trying to force them - take it slowly.

And this may sound argumentative, but I find ducks have a certain kind of smarts - designed to protect themselves from harm. Just because I don't see what they are worried about, does not mean there is nothing to worry about.

I think there was someone in the last week who had a similar issue.. Turned out a water moccasin had taken up residence at the watering hole in question.

Yes, that kind of thing. I have learned when my flock starts making the alarm call and I can see nothing to listen carefully. Often, I will hear the crows a ways down the brook making their alarm call, and I realize the ducks are participating in the bird equivalent of neighborhood watch.

That's so crazy!

Back to the OP, the color might have something to do with it too. If the pool is murky they might not know it well enough to trust it when they can't see in?
I'm guessing now.. I'm not really sure.
