we are keeping him inside the house in a pet taxi while I am treating him, while his foot is bad, there will be no jumping for this guy, or tromping in the mud, or in the wood pile.

I dont think I want to cut feathers and see him bleed along with being so swollen.

his foot looks a little better today...let red and swollen. Now it looks like it might be swollen from all the pin feathers coming in. The bottom of his foot was never swollen. And I got the little piece off tonight that I thought might have been the problem. It was a small little scab...but jsut on the surface (under his toe) but no infection, it just picked right off and looked fine all around it. I am going to keep giving him epsom salt and betadine soaks 2x's a day, and keep him on a special diet, and viatamins and in the house in the pet taxi for probably another week.
It's to muddy and cold out there for him yet. And DH and I still need to go and fix all the roosts in the original coop (I want there to be more ways for Nikki Roo to get down then to FLY!

It could be a very large corn or callus, or bumblefoot.  But what I have done in the past with my peacock and ducks (who got them regularly - corns/callus that is) was to treat the area with a verruca product. It worked a treat for them.  But I would wait until all the redness has gone out of the foot.  Also beneficial in fighting infections in any animal and good for digestion is a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in their drinking water.  I have never given any of my animals aspirin, but if any have been under the weather I have given them childrens calpol (paracetemol based product) for chickens only givng the tiniest amount using the small sized childrens dispensing spoon. ie if a small baby has 5ml of calpol, the chicken would get 1ml.

We  always  keep a DIP  NET    (  used for  fishing )  handy and  catch  our  hens/roosters  with it .

Well, again, we (I) soaked his foot in Epsom salts and batedine 2X's today...like I have been. And examined his foot. The thing I thought "might" be a core was nothing...there is no apparent injury!!!!
His foot mainly the tops of his toes, and the side running up his leg are swollen and red. I think the swelling has gone down some, but then again maybe it is wishful thinking on my part.

I feel so bad for him being in the pet taxi day and night, only coming out to have me soak his foot, and inspect him for something that is causing the swelling.

I have been giving him Duramycin-10 in his water per the package it came inbut dont even know if it will do anything since no one knows what is going on. (Including me)


Tomorrow (if it isnt wet and raining) we want to let him go see the girls out in the yard for a bit. to let him stretch, see his ladies, and also to see if he is still limping..I am at a loss.

Could is feather shafts be THIS READ AND SWOLLEN just from being a feather footed breed?

Does anyone have any ideas???

hmmm....i would let him out for a little bit...maybe an hour or two while its dry and stuff...maybe you could do that while you go and get that net lol....and then id bring him back in and scrub those little feet and continue doing what your doing...be sure and watch him to see if he's limping tho...also think..even if this all turns out fine and it was nothing, the two of you have gotten closer, youve gotten braver and he should be easier to catch...its good for him to get some human affection, whether he thinks so or not!
