New family in MN

Thread Starter

Hello everyone,

We are new to the site and live in Minnesota.  My wife has pushed me for a year now to BYC and I have finally agreed.  We have 3 kids to help us in this journey.  Main reasons are healthy eggs, helping teach responsibility to kids and of course happiness of sharing joying in pet companionship.

Our intention is to have 3-4 chickens and no more than that.

My biggest concern as this point is getting better ideas for coop design that works here in MN and don't kill my budget.  I will probably jump over into coop design and start a new thread.  I have sifted through a lot of it but hard to find exactly what application works for our desired number of birds and area/climate.

Cheers!

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

I think it would be great for you to join your state thread and ask  what type of  coop they feel is best for weather extremes.  You   could also inquire re: best breeds for the climate.

Just put "Minnesota in the searchbox  and it will pop up.  :welcome

Hi and welcome to BYC. DD has given you some great advice, so I'll just say a big hello.

Best wishes and good luck with the coop build.

Welcome to BYC :frow Glad you joined us over here! Have you looked through the coop designs here?

For very hot climates (I used to live in an extremely hot part of South Africa), I found having a spacious coop, loads of ventilation and shade in the run area helps a lot. If you can provide shade over the coop for some part of the day, even better.

Enjoy the site!
