I started the duck house this weekend. I am going to add a feeding area to this. My question is what should I use for the run area as I don't want it to be mud? I thought I read wood chips are not safe for ducks? Also the run area is 4 feet wide by 6 feet long (house is 4x4). Is that enough room for 4 ducks? They will be free range most of the time. This will be used at night and when we are gone for a weekend.

Also we are getting 4, 2 for each kid. I was wondering about tagging their legs so they know who's is who's. Would little colored zip ties be a bad idea?

Thanks!

(did use some old tin off an old barn on our land, thought it would be neat to tie like that into my duck house).

On zip ties, I use them on the ducklings, and right now, just one adult. I have to swap them out as they grow, but I haven't had an issue with them really. Much easier to remove than the spiral rings, but single use.

The coop is big enough for four ducks, if they will be outside during the day. I would give them a bigger pen, though, unless you are going to let them free range often. Nice coop, btw :)

Oh update on this, I went to a poultry show yesterday and saw about a dozen bird with zip ties as leg id. Some with two bands presumably because using 2 lets you id more individuals with fewer colors.

I did add more to the coop. A 3x5 feeding area. So the total sq is 55sq.

Almost finish...

Very nice! That pen is big enough, now. They will love it, I'm sure!
