So, I candled some eggs tonight at day 8. And since I've never done this before, I'm clueless. I have 8 eggs under a hen. Two are green and I cannot see anything in them at all (completely blocks the light). Of the rest, I definitely saw the veins in 2. Here are the other four, I am clueless.... I did smell each one and they all smelled quite fine. Is it just too early? Are they alive? Thank you for helping me :)

Egg number one. It has darker pigment on the top, but I thought I saw a darkish area in the middle.

Egg number two. No idea?

Egg number 3

Egg number four - I tried not to move them much, but couldn't help noticing that the dark part in this one seemed a bit orange, and moved around with any tilt of the egg. Unfertilized?

I'm not seeing any life in there :( It could just be the pictures though. This is what you are looking for:

Here's another picture of an egg on day eight:

There are other candling charts in the learning center too that you could compare your eggs to.

Thank you - that chart is incredibly helpful. I definitely have two others that have veins. Two of the ones that I posted photos of were odd - it almost seemed as if they had more pigment at the top. Is there a point when I should remove them from the nest if I think they are non-viable? And something that seems to be floating freely inside (like the last egg) - would that be definitely non-viable since it floats around?

I would say give them until day 14 and then pull them if there isn't any visible veining. That's what I usually do :)

Thank you for the suggestion to wait and recandle! Just recandled last night. The first and last egg were in fact not fertilized, but egg number two and three are viable! I even saw a baby move last night! Yay!
