Should I make a pip?

Hello,

Please could I ask your advice? I have 2 eggs on day 22. They were the only ones of 6 shipped eggs that made it to lock down. There has been no movement, peeping or pipping. I have been nervous about them as they both have very Saddled air sacs. I finally gave in and candled them this morning and I can see movement and the beaks are through into the internal air sac but as it was my first candle since day 18 I have no idea how long they have been like this. I am worried that they could be in a tricky position due to their saddle sacs and wondered if I should make a tiny pip to make sure they can breath. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should do?

Any help or views hugely appreciated!

I once had the same problem. It was a few days after the expected hatch date and i was very edgy. There was movement of course, and their beaks were through the external air sac. However before you make your decision on whether to help or not remember most people fully suggest not to help at all. But the decision is entirely up to you! Beware the chicks may be weaker if you do so or they may not be.

Give them a little more time its only day 22. On the same note Chicks have died in their egg shells from not being physically strong enough to make their way out. It seems your worried- When I was in this situation a while ago I made a decision to gently make a pip and they carried on from there . If I hadn't of done so goodness knows what would of happen. To inform you they did survive and are now very happy and healthy.

If they have run out of air they would definitely start to Pip. If you haven't noticed any Piping they may still have air available.

What ever the decision, its entirely up to you. Do not stress. If you happen to make a pip do it very very carefully and be cautious. Do it only were you know the Chicks body isn't or you could end up hurting the fella.

Thank you so much for your advice and for sharing your experience. I just went to get them out and start to carefully make a little pip. One is chirping and tapping away the other is tapping. I popped them back in, I think probably best to leave them be for now. I'm frantic at the end of hatching! Need to keep busy.

Hi everyone! I have a silki sitting on 3 egg it is technically day 23 and I have one egg hatching!!!! I'm very excited I've had chickens for years but this is my first time hatching! Thanks for reading!

That's a very good sign! Your babies should be hatched soon enough! Don't worry you can stop sitting on the edge of your seat and sit back normally Hatching day is the most nerve racking of them all.

Still no external pip. It's been over 5 hours. Does anyone know how long they can survive on the air internally without pipping? I'm still anxious about the saddle sac as I have read it can prevent the chicks being in the right position to pip effectively. The only thread I can find asking about this ended badly so a little worried...

I have an external pip on one egg!!! Yippee come on chicks!!

How's the hatch going?

We had a pip at 7am this morning and was still the same at 2pm! We helped it along a little bit there was a lot of blood on the membrane so we shoved it back under her and are hoping for a chick by morning I've read it can take 24 hours so we are trying to be patient
