Placing Baby Chicks with Hen!

So this is more of a general comment, I'm not really asking a question or anything like that. I have been replacing my flock over the past couple of months, we had a horrible winter, we lost nearly 30 hens do to a raccoon, and my coop became dilapidated. So, long story short, we're rebuilding.

My flock has started free ranging more this past year, than in past years and they have plenty of area to free range in. But out of my original flock I have only 2 birds left. 1 BCM hen and 1 Banty roo. They're thick as thieves usually. But, last night we decided to try something, we took Ms. Maran over to the newly constructed coop complete with laying boxes (5 Gallon buckets hung on the wall) in the late evening and placed some recently hatched chicks under her.

She's never hatched out a clutch of her own and since most of the flock is gone we thought this might cheer her up some. She hasn't been real sure here at first. When we placed her in there with the chick she kinda gave us the stink eye, (like what are you doing to me). After replacing them under her late last night, we finally decided to go to bed and just see how it plays out, leaving her locked away with the babies.

When I checked on her this morning before leaving to work, she was sitting just outside the nest and all the babies were huddled together except one who found it's way under her. And luckily they were all still alive, (not sure if she kept them warm all night or left them. It only got down into the upper 50's last night.

I waited and observed her to see how she was treating them, and periodically she would peck them quite hard. Not sure if this is normal or not but it was kinda like one of those, (get away from me kinda pecks). Lol.

My wife checked on her a little while ago and it was the same as when I first checked, 1 under her and the rest in the nest.

Keeping my fingers crossed she takes to them and them to her. Wish me luck!
