Sexing Speckled Sussex....

I just picked up two pullets (I hope). I had 4 pullets to choose from and grabbed the 2 with smallest combs. They are 13 weeks old. I posted on what breed/sex but found this thread and thought I post here to. What'd you think. They are so pretty I really hope they are gals

I would lean towards girls. The pictures I posted of mine were at around 11 weeks and you can see much more significant waddles and combs on mine at that age. However, that is just my guess. I had some of my SS Roo's develop much faster than others. I read so much about how sweet SS are and how they have such a nice personality, but the one female I kept is not friendly at all. She has also not started to lay yet. Wishing you the best of luck on two pullets.

Sorry I originally replied through my email which apparently you can't do I received an email today telling me this... Anyhow thanks. I'm hoping my gals get used to me soon, they are so skittish. Maybe yours will have a change of heart to. Time will tell

Typically you can wing or vent sex day old or young chicks. Have you tried either methods? Wing sexing is easy...hold chick and carefully extend wing looking along the back edge of wing at feather development. Males feathers will be uniform in length while females will have an alternating pattern of one longer then one shorter. Vent sexing is also easy by examining the vent while pushing with one finger upward toward tail and another finger downward and inward. A white/light yellow "bump" sexes a male. Youtube and internet have multiple sources for exact procedures. I always wing sex while picking up at farm store.

I thought female tail feathers are uniform in length, shape and evenness. Male feathers tend to be narrower, less uniform and often with a "point" on the end of feather. Fluffiness may work on close feathered hens, but all chicks tend to be a mix of down (fluffy) and new feather.
