It happened :( something attacked them

We let the chickens free range next to the house this afternoon and something attacked them. It was horrible. I have no idea what it even was! I went out to get them again and one was gone and the other injured to where it couldn't be saved. I feel so sick. Right next to the house too! I guess they will have to stay penned up for now on. I don't want to go through this again.

How unfortunate for you :(.  Chickens are very vulnerable when unprotected by fences or by having people around, and there are very many predators that love a free chicken dinner.  In addition, that predator now knows where it can get a meal.  Sounds like keeping them in would be wisest for now.

Home of the world's cutest dachshund, one crazy blue heeler, two cats,
one fat pony, and many (but not too many!) chickens

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?

We live in a neighborhood that is very active so I guess I felt safe letting them out for awhile. I was very wrong! My neighbors are outside working now and making lots of noise so I'm hoping that will deter whatever is was from coming back until I can pen them up. I'm out here watching them and they are starting to calm down. None of my neighbors chickens have been touched so I guess that's good. Helpfully once I get them again I can keep them safe
