Chicks and Drowning Risk

When is it safe to transition chicks to non-chick waterers.  I have one regular waterer (no nipple attachment) I was thinking of putting out, but wondering if it's too early for my month-old chicks and there is still a risk of drowning.

Is it a typical trough waterer?  I give one to my chicks around 3 weeks old, and they do fine with it.  I would not give them any type of open bowl or bucket.

I start my chicks, right out of the incubator with nipple waterers. I found some inserted into bottle caps. The bottle caps fit onto soda bottles up to 1 liter size. I just lightly poke their little beaks against the nipple as I transfer them from the incubator to the brooder. They pick right up on it, no problem. No worries about fouled water or drowning 😍

My broody raised chicks are out with the flock and their mama by ten to fourteen days of age, and use the regular galvanized waterers with no problems.  I wouldn't chance dog dish waterers, though.  Mary
