Hey everyone,
I have 4 Buff Brahma hens and I got a roo from a friend of mine, she said he was Dominique crossed with something?? Can't remember. Anyway, I decided it would be fun to hatch chicks. So being the inexperienced breeder I am, I started with 9 eggs, all of which are staggered, so I stuck them under my broody Agnes. 6 of them made it to lockdown and they hatched one by one. 4 days later, two eggs still hadn't hatched so I did the float test and they were moving! By then, Agnes had decided to move on to take care of the chicks. Long story short, she almost completely crushed one of the two eggs so I took it inside and put it in a hastily made brooder where it hatched, the other pipped but died

I kept this new chick in a brooder to dry and planned on slipping it under Agnes that night. Well that worked but the next day everyone was on the coop floor and this one was standing there cold. I took it back inside to the brooder and took another chick to keep it company and guidance. So everyone is happy right now, and I plan on moving the two chicks out to the flock when they are more vigorous. If that doesn't go well, I'll just raise those two myself. Anyway, it was a very eventful first hatch! 5/6 chicks isn't too bad for a first timer, right?

The chicks are interesting colors though, I'm curious as to how genetics played their part. I'm also wondering if anyone can guess as to what my Dominique roo may be crossed with?
