SICK HEN - 3rd one in a year, all similar symptoms

Suspected Mareks, although could be one of three viruses that causes tumors and displays similarly to Mareks. I have new chicks and all are vaccinated. I think I will just keep on with the flock I have. . . keep getting vaccinated chicks. =( Bummer.

I have a friend who is a vet pathologist who is inclined to believe it is one of the other two viruses given my hens were all over the age of 18 weeks when they got sick and died. The symptoms are so similar. She still recommends vaccinated chicks, but feels like it has a strong possibility of being the other virus. I'm happy to share my report with anyone that wants to see what one looks like. Although, I'd need a vet to help interpret if I didn't have a pathologist for a good friend.

I have one hen that sounds a LOT like what yours had and I am taking her to the University vet clinic tomorrow. Her fecal sample came back negative for worms and parasites. Shes on tylan and tetracycline. 3 ywats old. Just a little over a week ago didnt come down from her roost. Thought it was a leg injury but shes just slowly become less interested in eating a lot and stands for a bit but mostly lays down. No water belly. Her poop went from normal to now greenish indicating shes not eating enough. Shes warm but not hot. And vaccinated for Mareks as a day old. What is going on...I may never know. She is my pet and I hate this right now.

What is the other virus called and what can be done?

leukosis and I gather (I am not an expert) that if you have hens that have it, they will most likely die. It is only infections via mating and mother passing it to offspring via egg. I gather it is difficult in death of a chicken to tell the difference between Mereks and this but this is called "wasting disease". That's all I know. I also know it effects hens that are older (Marek's tends to effect younger chickens generally from what I gather). That's generally my info on it though. It's hard to tell the difference between the two, even in necropsy, but if they are older, it can be the Leukosis.

You still might lose your flock that is infected, but I gather if you get chicks/hens that aren't infected you are good to go. A much better prognosis than Mareks which is long lasting in your environment.

Where did you get her? My idea is that it would be less likely to come from a big name hatchery than a local one.

I wish I knew more. The only thing I am sure of is that there are many things that can kill chickens.
