New in town. Howdy!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
After 6-7 years of flirting with the idea of getting chickens we jumped on the bandwagon about a week ago. We are really having fun with it so far but also becoming more and more aware of how little we know.
We live in the city of San Diego, so these are city chickens. Thanks to the amazingness of City Farmers Nursery, which has been in City Heights for 30+ years, backyard chickens are pretty much normal. (Our neighbors even have a turkey!)
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have five chicks born 5/4/2016. Since they are out in our garage we've got them on Ustream, you can take a peak here.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Three Rhode Island Reds and two Barred Plymouth Rock
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I was googling around thinking... "There has to be a group of people somewhere doing this." Really thankful to have found this group, we don't know anything.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We are outdoor people. We moved to SoCal in 2008 and have pretty much fallen in love with everything SoCal. I'm into kayak fishing the bays and Pacific coast. My wife is into hiking and running. Whenever we have free time we find ourselves drawn to the water. Right now, we're addicted to taking our dogs to the beach.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We've been married almost 19 years and have 3 kids spanning 10 years. Besides the chicks we have an adult indoor/outdoor cat, Lovely, who keeps the rodent and lizard population in check. We've got two dogs adopted from local shelters. [On Instagram as Hellomurray]
We both work from home. My wife runs customer service for an online weight management company and I help lead a coaching and publishing company.
We look forward to learning a bunch. Next on our agenda is building the coop!
