Our Island Chicken Coop

It's been 2 days since the storm announcement....hope everything's ok with @SuperK
Probably at least power and internet access outages.
Thanks for the concern aart, the storm was a tropical storm not a hurricane. Sustained winds only 55-65 mph, gusting to 70 occasionally.
I used to live in the High Desert; Antelope Valley in California where this kind of wind wouldn't have even close the schools; but the rain? That is a whole different matter in Lancaster.

Our place did get a lot of rain however, about 10 inches over two days but the volcanic soil is so porous it drained away almost as fast as it fell. There was a bit of flooding in some of the lower lying areas, but nothing more than a foot. I was interested in how the coop would fare, sine it isn't actually anchored to the earth, just reinforced piers on top of it. I got some water incursion into the nest boxes, only one was really dry, wind driven water came through the ventilation windows and drained down the inside of the north gable end into the nests. Other than that, it was a great test of a new coop.

Good luck with the storm. Do you have your people and poultry hurricane kits and plenty of water?
Thanks to you as well Flocking, I didn't see your post until after I responded to aarts. Thanks to everyone for their concern and best wishes, Nature can certainly be a cruel taskmaster at times.
As to your questions, all peoples were secure, and you can see the reply above for the peepers / coop answers. Here in Hawaiian Paradise Park very few of the 8000 properties have piped in "city" water. Most of us have a catchment system of one type or another. Our tank is about average and holds 10,000 gallons and is fed by the gutters on our home. We do have a weeks worth of food squirrelled away but we plan on having a bit more in the coming months. We are also part of the neighbor hood watch and planning to become part of the disaster prep group here in the park. In a disaster situation, you can never have too many friends or neighborhood contacts.

So glad all is well. Something I've learned in 30+ of growing up in south Florida is hurricane preparation. We found keeping a few MRE's squirrelled away can seem like a God sent after a few days of living out of cans.

Let us know what you alter with the nesting boxes if anything. We haven't had a storm in a while, and I'm worrying that we might be due, so any pointers are great. About to get back to hammering and sanding.

I see that I didn't update this thread after the storm! I guess it was because it was so much hype then nada. The tropical storm was a bust here on our side. the wind and rain we got wasn't really tropical storm worthy though some parts of the island did get some higher winds than we did. Every thing is ship shape and running smoothly.
