I have a lab/chow mix that is far too interested in our birds. I'm afraid that he may kill them (it happened in the past with 2 different dogs) and I don't know how to teach him to be a little less homicidal. How have you all managed to socialize your dogs with your birds?

Yea shock collars work really well for stopping bad behavior in dogs. My Dog used to chase cars and chickens but I got her a shock collar and she doesn't chase cars or chickens anymore.

Tell your dog "NO" if he gets too close. That's what I did. My dog went from chasing the chickens to pretty much leaving them alone. He's pretty stubborn, too, so it took some time and a few taps on the nose, but he learned.

X2. I used a really low setting, and kept her on leash while I walked her up to the run fence. Every time she locked onto them with her gaze I zapped her. This even worked despite the fact she has caught a chicken in the past! Now, I can walk her past the chickens on a loose leash. Sometimes the vibrate setting might be enough.

Start working with dog in leash where you start by going past birds calmly to got off property or into field. Encourage dog's interest in other things away from chickens. Long walks can help. Periodically take dog back through area with chickens making sure you also ignore chickens. Chicken area is were you and dog should rest but be concerned about what is going on beyond chicken areas. Avoid focusing your own attention on chickens as dog will see that and do the same. Do not handle chickens in front of dog.

Yes, that worked with mine, too. Don't ever chase one or try to catch it in front of your dog, either! I did this a while ago and the dog thought that it must be OK for him to do it, too.

Perfect. Shock collars can be such useful tools. I used one to keep my pup at the time, from chasing new turkeys.
She had no problem with chickens, but I guess, turkeys were soo big! :)

Thank you! I've been keeping him on a run when he's in the yard. The birds can come to him, but he can't get to them. The thing is, ducklings are fearless! They will invite themselves to swim in his water bowl. I had at one point placed a dog crate in his area with them inside to make them more like background noise than chew toys. So far, so good. I still don't trust him 100%. If this doesn't work, the shock collar will be next!
