I have three 5 week old chicks that I inherited from my sister's friend and am probably going to end up adding them to my 6 hen flock. The problem is, I need to feed them but i'm not sure I want to buy separate feed just for the three of them. I've heard layer feed is bad for them because of the calcium but does anyone have experience with this? also are pellets by themselves safe for 5 week old chicks? I'm hoping I can get by with letting them free range some during the day and scraps and a little bit of the hens layer feed but not sure. Thanks for any input?
