Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

I wish I'd known that the desire to keep your chickens "happy" would override common sense.

(hint: there might be some chicken babies in there in 3 weeks, just so Josephine's maternal instincts aren't thwarted)

Oh how true! My girls' coop is the 'chicken palace' - so named by my husband as he thinks they are treated like princesses! And yes, they are spoilt rotten, more for my benefit than theirs ;)

"chicken palace" yeah I envy designs I've seen on here. My problem is I want to do up a palace but there is a difinate lack of $$
Enter free wood scraps and pallet! Latest addition is another section of "walkway" and another bit of privy "fence" (pallets) and a nice table for them to get up on with a ramp made out of a bit of bedframe since the girls love to get up high on things. Also acts like a rain cover when they don't want in but don't want to get wet neither. AND...also made a compost bin off to the side there in the trees with...pallets. Just enough space to stick heads in between the slats but not enough space to get in an toss the pile from here to far sides of creation. Never noticed till I looked at this picture but don't the mini barn look like a creepy face with the lights on inside?

Looks like a perfectly good palace to me! Quite a few super-cute and fully functionable coops are made from salvaged materials. Nothing wrong in recycling as long as the structure is build sound.

I love your coop chickrunfun - and I'm sure your girls love it too. As far as I'm concerned the title 'palace' doesn't depend upon how much a coop cost, but how much it meets (or exceeds) your flock's needs. My coop is much bigger than I really need for my flock, with a reclaimed porcelain sink (20€ from a campsite we stayed at in Italy) on top of a couple of the cheapest kitchen units I could find in the local DIY store to give some storage space for feed etc. The girls have plenty of space to pootle around even before the coop door opens in the morning, and I have cold running water to clean their food and water dishes without having to carry them up to the house and back down again! As far as I and my girls are concerned, that's luxury!

Hmmmm, what a great thread!
1. When hatcheries say they have a ninety percent sexing accuracy, this means they have fifty percent, so do not order roosters and hens or you will be overrun with roosters before you know it.
2. I wish I'd known about BYC the day I started researching chickens and not four months into my chicken keeping endeavor.
3. Chicken fever is a very real possibility, ALWAYS build your coop larger than you ever think you will fill. You will always find anyway to fill it.....

All I can think of at the moment.......
